Development on Crysis 4 is "on hold." Crytek has announced that the upcoming Xbox first-person shooter has been shelved and that it plans to lay off around 60 employees from across its development and shared services teams.

Crytek announces layoffs, pauses development on Crysis 4, and goes all in on Hunt: Showdown 1896

  • Crytek is laying off around 60 employees to remain "financially sustainable."
  • Development on Crysis 4 was paused in Q3 2024
  • Crytek says it remains committed to Hunt: Showdown 1896 and has plans to expand and evolve the multiplayer game
"Like so many of our peers, we aren’t immune to the complex, unfavorable market dynamics that have hit our industry these past several years," Crytek said in a statement. "It pains us greatly to share today that we must lay off an estimated 15% of our around 400 employees. The layoffs affect development teams and shared services. This has not been an easy decision to make, as we deeply appreciate the hard work of our talented teams."

Crytek goes on to explain that after putting Crysis 4 development on hold in Q3 2024, it has been trying to move developers over to work on Hunt: Showdown 1896. However, it adds that while the multiplayer game is still growing, and even after efforts to reduce costs, Crytek "cannot continue as before and remain financially sustainable," and as a result, layoffs "are inevitable to move forward." Affected employees will be offered severance packages and career assistance services.

Rounding off the statement, Crytek says that with Hunt: Showdown 1896, it has a "very strong gaming service and remains fully committed to its operation. It also has plans to expand and evolve the game with "great content."

Crysis 4 was announced back in 2022, and since then, we haven't heard anything about the game until now. Hopefully, Crytek will be able to pick up development on the Xbox shooter soon. What are your thoughts on this? Let us know down in the comments.
