The new upcoming Fable game is one of the biggest Xbox Game Studios titles on the horizon, as well as one of the most-anticipated entries on our big list of all the upcoming Game Pass games. It's in the hands of Forza Horizon developer Playground Games, and from what we've seen so far, it looks very promising indeed. It has, however, also been a while since we've heard much in the way of new Fable details, so now seems a good time to go through and refresh everything we know so far about the new Fable game. Check it all out below.

When is Fable 4 coming out?

fable everything we know

Fable is currently set to launch in 2025.

The game was announced back in 2020 and has had a good few years to bake, with Playground Games having stepped up its hiring for the Fable team over the past few years with a few major staff changes. Playground Games co-founder Gavin Raeburn left the company after 12 years in 2022.

Meanwhile, Anna Megill joined Playground Games in 2021 as a lead writer for Fable and moved up to narrative lead the year after, before “stepping away” from the role this year. 2022 also saw Playground Games bringing a Horizon Forbidden West senior writer, Andrew Walsh, on board for the project.

All the trailers we've seen so far have been very promising for what to expect when Fable does arrive. We don't have a specific date yet, but an Xbox Games Showcase did at least bring us confirmation that Fable 4 will launch in 2025.

What platforms is Fable 4 coming to?

Fable 4 is set to come to Xbox Series X|S as an Xbox console exclusive, alongside Windows PC.

Being an Xbox console exclusive, it would seem unlikely that Fable will come to PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch. However, the Xbox team has been a bit all over the place when it comes to exclusives, so we'll leave it as "Xbox exclusive until Microsoft says otherwise."

Is Fable 4 coming to Xbox Game Pass?

Yes, it’s published by Xbox Game Studios so Fable 4 will come to Game Pass on day one.

Is it called Fable 4 or not?

fable everything we know

When rumours began circulating of a new Fable game, the assumption was that it would be Fable 4. This new Fable game is the next instalment in the franchise, but it’s also a reboot. Playground Games describes it as “a new beginning for the legendary franchise.”

So yes, it's the fourth Fable game, and everyone is going to call it Fable 4, but it apparently won't be called that when it launches. Video game naming conventions are confusing.

What is the story and setting for Fable 4?

fable everything we know

The new Fable looks to be focusing on the role of heroes. One Fable trailer, which you can check out further down this round-up, was all about what heroes got up to in Albion — at least, according to Richard Ayoade’s mildly irritated giant character. As per Xbox’s description: “What does it mean to be a Hero? Well, in the fairy tale land of Albion, that is entirely up to you. With a dark threat looming, and in a world where your reputation precedes you, your choices will change Albion forever.”

Dark threat: check. World-altering choices: check. All good signs for a magical fantasy game. One thing a lot of Fable fans were hoping for was that this new Fable reboot will have as much of a focus on choices, and the morality of your character, as the older titles, and Xbox’s description sounds pretty promising on that front.

Fable 4 is still set in Albion, as were all the games before. The first game had a more medieval-style setting, while the second was hundreds of years later and the third later again with a more industrial revolution-style background. From what we’ve seen of the new Fable, it looks to be embracing the more medieval style of things again. Bring on fairy tales, folklore, and deeply British humour.

The latest trailer from 2024's Xbox Games Showcase (shown below) also introduced the character of Humphry, who was apparently one of Albion's greatest heroes. He's meant to be retired but is called upon to help our character when "a mysterious figure from his past threatens Albion's very existence."

What type of game is Fable 4?

Fable 4 gameplay

The Fable Xbox page has it firmly set down as an action-RPG.

If you took a wander over to the Playground Games careers page hiring for the Fable team, when Playground Games was still hiring for a senior narrative designer and senior gameplay designer, among others, you could can glean a little more information.

A number of roles were described as working on open-world gameplay, while the senior narrative designer was to handle “compelling storylines, satisfying interactions, and rich lore.” The senior gameplay designer was to focus on “character-driven gameplay systems and memorable combat encounters,” while the senior producer role asked for skill at handling “large, complex AAA projects.”

As for what we’ve seen so far, there’ll most likely be plenty of exploration of that open world, as well as combat against bandits and beasties alike — as Ayoade’s character says of heroes, “they like to rough up bandits, don’t they?”

Fable 4 trailers

The official announcement trailer for Fable 4 (or just Fable) came three years ago at the Xbox Games Showcase in 2020. It was a CGI trailer showing a fairy flying through a fantasy landscape. You can see the trailer below:
We got a second trailer this year at the Xbox Games Showcase. It's mostly a CG trailer featuring the brilliant Richard Ayoade as a horticulture-obsessed giant, but there are some gameplay snippets in there too. You can see the full trailer below.
Another familiar voice appeared when the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase brought us a new trailer narrated by Matt King (Peep Show's Super Hans) as Humphry, Albion's "greatest" (and apparently retired) hero. This new trailer gave us some shots of our character exploring a beautiful town, as well as Humphry being brought out of retirement to help our hero against an impending danger.
