It's because 4k is such a big leap, and this gen it has finally got to the point where everyone expects it as standard now. FPS is always going to be the thing that loses out to whatever the current gen graphical newness is.
Then why is it locked to 30fps. Why can't we set our output to 1080p and play at 60fps?

What confounds me is that on the PC side there are so many settings we can change to achieve whatever frame rate you want. If you look at PS5 and Series consoles they're essentially PC systems...DF has said as much. Yet we don't get a settings menu to pare down visuals etc. to get better frame rates and performance just a toggle. I'll be interested in seeing performance on old PC hardware.

I still have a system running a 7th gen i7 and a GTX 1080 (non ti variant) and it can pull 60fps in most games on high (no ray tracing) so it perplexes me that the PS5 and Series consoles can't as their CPU and GPU both out pace my old PC on paper.

Developers do this purposefully...Here's the game plan...

    1. Release with 30 FPS. Have the game at 30 for about a year to a year and a half.
    2. Notice the dwindling player count.
    3. Release update with 60 FPS mode.
    4. Watch as numbers re-rise.
    5. Announce DLC right after..

    Look at Starfield.
This has to be the case, there's no other explanation why they're dumbing down their own product. On release they target the two thirds of the audience that doesn't care about performance, a year later they get the rest and advertise some add-on in the process. Game gets a second wind and the investors are satisfied by the longevity of their investment. It's a frikkin business tactic and we're fighting over specs and the uselessness of the series S...

Meanwhile, on the PS5 box: Up to 8k 120fps

    Ah, the marketing...

A lot of the most popular games are Indies where this stuff doesn't matter. I've been playing Puppet Combo games recently, and better graphics and framerate would absolutely ruin the games' atmosphere.

As another person posted earlier, sometimes it is an artistic choice rather than a failure to hit a benchmark.

. Instead, streamers, Youtubers, reviewers, etc. act like your moron if you don't/can't plunk down thousands of dollars for a gaming PC.

Amusingly and somewhat ironically a significant number of those content creators don't even know what their hardware is or how to compare it to a games system requirements. They have to have somebody else tell them what to buy (assuming they don't just buy whatever is newest and/or most expensive at the time) and then build it for them and then can't handle anything more complex than powering it on and starting their game.

This is really a clickbait article. :( It really sucks to see so many obvious clickbaits on a site that is meant to be for xbox fans. He clearly says the game runs at a MINIMUM 30 FPS and THEY ARE STILL WORKING ON IT AS IT IS THE LAST STEP FOR THEM BEFORE LAUNCH. While the title of the article make it sound like this is already confirmed to be 30 Fps. I also don't get why we even need an article about 30 Fps in a Video Game...never bothered me on the Xbox 360 and it doesn't bother me here.

Just stop with these negative articles all the time.

I wish people that claim everything is clickbait would learn what that term really means. The headline of this article clearly summarizes the primary message of the article itself - that is the exact opposite of clickbait. If it said "You won't believe the performance targets for Avowed" and made you wade through 30 slides with one image each and one of three statements phrased slightly differently, and then only giving you the info you were looking for on slide 29, THAT would be clickbait.
Don’t play chess with a pigeon. It’ll just knock over the pieces, shit all over the board, and then strut around like it won the game.

I always laugh when people complain about this because I literally cannot see any difference. It's totally meaningless to me. It's like watching people bitch and moan that the game only runs at 37 biblawaffles per septagon. 🤣

Even if I could see a difference, who gives a shit? Is the game fun? That's the only question I care about. Maybe I'm just old, but this feels like such a silly and stupid thing to whine about. Like of all the things to give a fuck about. If you care that much then drop the price of a used car on a high end gaming PC so you can not-see all those extra frames. 😂
Everyone who owns a TV (screen) bigger than 20 inches can see the difference. You've clearly never played at 60fps. If you had, you would definitely know the difference.
If I look at it side by side I can see a difference then. It also, and I cannot stress this enough, does not fucking matter.

All of you people having a meltdown that a single player game is "only" 30fps, please find something actually important to get so worked up over.
So you just lied for shock value, and an interaction. How unsurprising.

Also, "it does not fucking matter".... To you. As you can see, many other people care.

I'll never quite understand people like you, who say things like "it doesn't matter" or "who cares", all while arguing about it, and putting other people down because of their own opinions on the matter that you admittedly "don't care" about.
I'd love to know how I "lied for shock value" 🙄 What a fucking joke. After I read all that nonsense I went out of my way to look up comparisons, and then only by looking at 30fps literally side by side with 60fps and 120fps could I tell any difference at all. If it is not literally side by side I do not notice it AT ALL. Which is what I was talking about. If I'm just seeing gameplay or a video playing, I do not notice or even think about its frame rate.

And I can see that lots of other people care, what I can't see is why. It's a complete non-issue to whine about. There are people in here dooming over how console gaming is "dead" and saying they'll refuse to buy games that are 30fps. That's fucking stupid, period. Regardless, this may sound paradoxical to you, but you can not care about an issue itself while still caring that the issue is somehow controversial.
    ???????!

The thing is, light only travels at 30fps, so anything above that is just a placebo unless you're sitting really close to your TV.

Because console is supposed to be a curated experience. I don't want to spend half an hour researching and testing the most optimal settings for every new game, and I don't want to listen to morons who would turn every setting to max and then complain when it runs like dog shit. If you want to mess about with that stuff then the answer as you say is to get a PC.

Regarding your 1080, it's obviously still a very good card even now and competitive against the current midrange offerings. But 1080 is around 2 million pixels, 4k is around 8 million. So even at 60fps your 1080 is only pushing half the pixels of a 30fps 4k device.

They need to get rid of the Series S. That thing doesn’t even quality as a next gen console if it can’t proper run next gen game. That toaster is single handledly holding this generation back and killing the Xbox scene entirely.

The reason games take so long to come to Xbox, if they even come to Xbox at all, is cuz they have to tear down the game and make an inferior build so the series s can even run it.
Here's the thing: They sold 23 million Series S and 7 million Series X this gen. Against 63 million PS5. Guess which SKU is the first one to not be supported?
That's the issue, gaming is a luxury, catering to the jobless normies only hurts video games. If you can't afford a $500 console, either you have other priorities outside this hobby that you find more important and should wait until you have the money for the hobby, or you simply can't afford the $500 console and SHOULD be prioritizing other stuff outside of gaming until you CAN afford the console. Series S will be the reason why Xbox dies if they don't abandon it.

Quit whining. The current consoles are really old at this point and they're far from cutting edge. Stable 30 FPS is fine and if you don't like it, buy a PC.

I don't get the "Xbox is dead, buy a PC" argument for this. Xbox aims for 4K gaming. Depending on the complexity of the graphics you could get 60FPS.

Here's what the Steam 2024 Hardware says as of today:
    1920 x 1080 - 57.28%
    2560 x 1440 - 20.03%
    3840 x 2160 - 3.65%
Steam has 132 million monthly active users.
About 75 million people who play on Steam play at 1080p.

Buy a PC, which is more expensive than an Xbox, and play games at 1080p. It's clear that the majority of people don't care about resolution. They only care about resolution AND frame rate on Xbox.

I don't disagree that 4K is important and 60FPS is important, but the current gen of consoles is about 4K gaming, 60FPS if possible.

I also think Obsidian could've given a simple 4K30 quality mode and 1080/60 mode option.
    Would you kindly...

If the xbox wants to be a serious video gaming brand they need to ditch the series S. Even better, go back in time and never release the Series S in the first place.

I don't know how anyone is blaming the series S for this. That console has become such a Scapegoat that people will blame for anything. If anything, a Series S release means it's actually more likely to be able to hit higher frames, since the game was "held back by series S".

It would be like blaming a Switch release on the Series X for not doing 4k on a game.

"Explaining, Hansen said Obsidian decided to go for 30fps in order to facilitate fancier visuals" it really is this simple.

Baldurs Gate 3 on PS5 (when it was initially exclusive), is 30fps by 1440p if you don't have the dynamic scaling of the performance mode. In order to run a PS5, highly acclaimed game at 60fps, you have to basically run it at 1080p. The fact of the matter is that when given the power to play with, Devs choose to push the power to limit, and these consoles aren't up to the current level that Devs are playing on.
