Avowed looks like a gorgeous Xbox RPG, but the combat is missing something

This is still quite far out and might get delayed to boot so they have all the time to fix the addressed issues....should they see them as issues that is. I am not exactly hyped be the game to begin with.

For me, its looks similar to skyrim. However, ot looks more interesting and fun then skyrims battle system. So I will look forward to the release to hear and see more about it. It could be a fun new ip.

I hope they add more death animations instead of all enemies just falling over like a Gmod character.

Graphically the world looks nice, but everyone else reminds me of a 360 game visually. Not that it's a bad thing as long as the art style lends itself to a more animated quality and not an attempt at photorealism.

As for combat, my biggest issue seems to stem more from the animations then the combat itself. Enemies flinch at random rather then in response to your stack and there's no cohesion between your attack style and the flinch animation being used. It's like they took the const from Dragon Age: Origins and put it in first person, something that doesn't really work in an action RPG and in a camera perspective where everything is literally in your face. It's almost like going back to Morrowind and using a chest to remove the 'Chance to Miss' function.

Im interested in the game for the writing and the exploration. Being an Obsidian title and not being Turn-based means it's already better than that Baldur's Gate 3 turd for me. I just hope they stick the landing and make it an amazing ride and not another Starfield. It looks like it has the content. It just needs to shore up the mechanics to pull it off.

The combat didn't look great, but it also isn't something unfixable.
Just hope they aren't fixated on releasing it in it's current state when they still have the option to take in community feedback.

Basically what I said in the other thread about combat:

It looks bad. The first issue I have is the camera choice giving the mild fish eye/wide field of view that makes movies like Hardcore Henry mildly unsettling to view. Basically they’re giving me a crap camera angle to make up for the fact that they chose a first person view and then wanted 3rd person behind the shoulder combat design. Barf.

Enemy reactions to attacks barely exist (and are so underwhelming that many appear to be random ). This is below expectations for a modern game. If you hit an enemy with a broadsword it should flinch like it got hit (and cut) by a large hunk of metal. I didn’t see any damage indications either, no blood, no limping foes, etc.

The wands look dumb. The block animation makes them look especially so. The view of a pencil sized piece of wood held up to block a sword swing or whatever is especially immersion breaking. Make the character block with a vambrace or something instead. Also the wands look like you’re shooting sparklers at the enemy. An invisible projectile with an impact animation, even if that is some force impact animation (bits of debris flying up, a flash of energy, etc.) would look less uncanny. It’s what we’re used to from so many shooters with guns.

Other weapons, as others have said, look like they have zero weight to them, move unrealistically quickly and have no visible impact that they connected with anything. If that’s a sword it looks like it could just as well be a knife, it looks bad.

Look I know I praise Dead Island 2 probably too much but that’s your minimum bar for making melee combat look good from a first person perspective now days. The weapons look good, they have (mostly) a realistic feeling weight based on speed and swing acceleration. The zombies look like you hit them and when they die they die in ways that look like they died from the thing that killed them. They fall or fly or explodes and bits of them fly all in the directions one might expect based on what you, the player, did to them (or caused to happen, I take credit for all tanker truck explosions in Venice Beach).

Even still in multiplayer watching another player attack still looks stiff and weird. So even they didn’t totally get everything right, but they got far more right than Avowed has so far…

    And again, that camera, uhg!

I just think people need to learn to regulate their hype, especially if you have gamepass and plan to play these games on there. If you do that, you won’t be so soul shattered if a game isn’t exactly what you hoped it would be. I think the game visually looks good but I was worried about how they really only showed a ton of lizard guys but hey I’ll play it and I’m sure I’ll enjoy it
This is very good advice. People LOVE pointing fingers elsewhere when a hype train fails but not all look inward. Lower your expectations in life, you'll be significantly happier!

I think the combat looks awesome. Not sure what you are on about, Mr West. Look at Eso instead. That game is the pitz. Level 127 and a bat can still do me in. Just awful.

Well PSN i suppose it could be another generic MMO so we have to be grateful for some things. Good rpg exclusive on psn coming out soon? 0
Horizon is a good game but that is about it. Days gone 2 yeah. Other than that I guess you guys have the decades old final fantasy series. I had better get my ps2/3 out and play some of these classics.

I have absolutely ZERO expectations for anything Xbox related at this point tbh. The past 10 years have pretty much PTSD'd me out of any hype I can possibly have lol. If it's good, great. If it's another Xbox stinker, well; just add it to the list. Genuinely expecting only the worst outcome is pretty liberating tho. It's always nice when you get something actually good.
    So it goes...

Obsidian gave us The Outer Worlds, so expect something of that caliber. I really don't understand why people look at a developer and expect drastically different outputs. I'm expecting a fantasy Outer Worlds, which is good and bad at the same time, because TOW had some good stuff and also a lot of flaws.

As I was watching the event, I kept getting the weirdest vibe, like it was originally planned for Kinect, for some strange reason.

Could be good eventually, but the recent combat gameplay kinda rubbed me the wrong way. Cant really put my finger on it, but it seems off.

It looks like a Fable Kinect game. Immensely disappointing.
Good analogy. I hope the demo wasn't a good representation of what the final product will be.

I’m super pumped for this game, I feel like it’s like an advanced Skyrim mixed with fallout kinda vibe idk I think it’s gonna be good but only time will tell! Will it make it to gamepass? Hopefully

I think I’ll enjoy this a lot more than The Outer Worlds which I did think was great too.
I do agree that the combat lacks oomph and I hope they can fix that by the time it’s released.
I’m already prepared for the inevitable delay to 2025 along with Indiana Jones. Nothing makes its initial release date these days but that’s fine as long as the game is good.
