Not shocked, but a little disappointed.

I tampered my expectations a bit more this time. With Starfield being the way it was, I was truly hoping for a serious Bethesda competitor. Just like Outer Worlds was supposedly the answer to Fallout but wasn't, I guess this won't be the answer to Elder Scrolls.

It's sad, but no one makes RPG's like Bethesda, including Bethesda. I hope this is good anyway, better than Outer Worlds was, and hopefully ES6 isn't another Starfield.

I think this is ultimately a good trend for the industry as a whole.

For a long time, I feel like developers have been making games longer purely for the sake of increasing completion times, and we're at a point where it feels excessive to me because it isn't mostly mindless side content anymore. In the last few years, I've found myself losing interest in a lot of games, particularly RPGs, about 70-80% of the way through the main story. I'd much rather developers cut or condense that last ~20% so it doesn't feel like it drags quite as much, so I'm glad to hear Obsidian is happily making somewhat shorter RPGs.

As long as it is 20-50 hours of quality content I'm fine with it. Getting kind of tired of 100+ hour games where 80-90 hours is just forgettable filler to extend the run time.

Honestly, excellent longevity by my standards. Neither short nor long. Okay, probably shorter than the length of a traditional RPG. I have over 5000h+ in Skyrim, possibly closer to 10k. The thing is, most of this happened 10-12 years ago. Back then I spent a lot of time on just one game, today I like to enjoy a wider variety of titles. Something that contributes to this interesting discussion, especially nowadays, is that the proportion of adult players is considerably higher than in the 90s. Myself, with work, living alone with a house to take care of, social relationships, gym, etc. ... I'm lucky if I can manage 1 hour a day for my hobby. Yesterday I took a day off and only played 2 hours. I miss the Skyrim era haha

That's the perfect length for me! Looking forward to play this.

40-50 hours is solid for an open world RPG.
Not every game, needs to be 200+ hours long.
Dude The Outer Worlds was like 20 hours at most this is not gonna be 40-50 hours
35 hours to get full 1000/1000 for me. A good length in my opinion. Games are too long these days.

It's interesting how game length is considered an important measure for gaming but not other mediums.

For example, I can't think of many (if any) people who watched Killers of the Flower Moon because it was 3 hours and was therefore a "better value" than something shorter like Aquaman, which was a hair over 2 hours.

Similarly, I don't find people recommending War and Peace because it's 1,400 pages and therefore a "better value" than a book like One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich.

Is the US version of House of Cards a "better value" than the UK version because the US version is 13 episodes a season while the UK version is 4?

Yet why is gaming still stuck in that mindset? Especially when we know that "number of hours" is usually inflated with boring, menial tasks that no one cares about anyways. Like, is Fallout 4 that much better a game because it has a radiant Quest system that allows them to create unlimited quests of mediocre-at-best quality?

I really hope this is going to be good but I was already very unimpressed by Outer Worlds (at least when it comes to gameplay..the humor did land but thats very subjective). God knows a good Xbox exclusive is what we need after the latest duds and bad news.

Dude. We are not talking about speed running the main storyline on the easiest difficulty whilst following a guide and skipping all the dialogue. That may be the way you enjoy a game, but I don’t get any satisfaction playing that way. I can only assume you have another account or play games on PlayStation or Switch. You only have 3 achievements on Xbox/Windows, which took you 4 hours. Good luck getting the other 45 achievements in 16 hours.
I was not saying it was 20 hours to do 100% just that it was 20 hours for a average playthrough and not to expect it to be a large 50 hour RPG based on what they've been saying. I played it on my PS4 in 2019, I play all consoles and PC. I apologize if I came off like a dick.

Yeah I played AC Valhalla when it came out on PS5 for 89 hours and was only at 65% trophy completion, insane.

Okay, then we were talking at cross purposes. The OP and myself were basing the time it takes off the news article.
It takes around 15 hours to beat The Outer Worlds' story, and roughly double that if you explore the RPG's side content.

As for unlocking all of the base The Outer Worlds achievements, that takes between 40 and 50 hours, according to estimates — hopefully, this will be the same for Avowed.

This subject of game length is really interesting. There seems to be an assumption by many gamers that longer is better, but I find myself starting to burn out before the end of most games.
    This.
