It's how we end up with games like 2K, whose MyTEAM mode, for example, appears to be designed to hook players into a grind that takes as much of their time as possible without burning them out. I don't think gamers (myself included) want games to turn into another version of TikTok, where engagement is all that matters, no matter how hollow it is.
Lol you just compared Game Pass to 2K of all things? It's not just time spent playing. It's also the amount of player engagement, word of mouth, and reviews. I don't see the argument here because 2K is an annual games as a service model and over half of Game Pass' library is full of single player games. Game Pass has the games that turn in a not-so-bad grind, the ones that can be played solo, ones that include couch coop or multiplayer, and the ones that will deliberately be in the interest of story-driven, narrative players. Many games can see the light of day thanks to this subscription model. Compared to Netflix, the games won't be canceled even after they leave the service and they take that engagement and success with them.
