I really liked the outer worlds but my only gripe was how short the game was. I was hoping avowed would be a bit bigger but I'm still excited for it nevertheless.

This subject of game length is really interesting. There seems to be an assumption by many gamers that longer is better, but I find myself starting to burn out before the end of most games.

Quality over quantity! I can't wait to play it!

And it's still 20x longer than the last Call of Duty 🤣

I didn't mind the length of Outer Worlds, but I would hope that Avowed has more depth when it comes to weapons, enemies, skills, and companions. Hopefully because it takes place in Eora, a lot of the groundwork was already done by Pillars 1&2.

Either way this is probably my most anticipated game this year. Wrpgs are my favorite games, and the Living Lands reminds me of Morrowind in the way the environment seems completely foreign. As much as I like Oblivion, the vanilla high fantasy of Cyrodiil was not as interesting as Vvardenfell, so I'm hoping Avowed gives that same sense of a unique setting.

I share your point of view. I also prefer shorter games over longer ones. The problem is that compared to 15 years ago, we have way more games coming out in a year, each trying to get the player's attention. Especially now with every major AAA game being a 30+ hours open world game, it's easy to burn out.

In the current age I also think it's challenging to create large 100+ hour open world games if development costs are rising so quickly. The dev teams need to keep the scope of the game in check if they want to be finished in a reasonable amount of time and want to sell the game at $60-$70.

I actually prefer shorter games, it gives you a chance to replay and make different choices without spending 200 hours for 2 playthrus. As long as the game is good, and it has enough content to be worthy of the price tag. If it's a $70 game and only 7 hours long i wouldn't consider that a value, but if I can get 20-30 hours out of a $70 game then it's all good.

40-50 hours is solid for an open world RPG.
Not every game, needs to be 200+ hours long.

The important thing is that it has an engaging story and characters (mass effect etc.) and/or nice replayability if it is shorter (different rpg tree builds to try out or a different style to play the story like stealth vs guns a blazing)
if u have ez games on your gamercard dont b a hypocrite and stop others from enjoying the same games and try not 2 spend more than 4 dollars for them

This is a little dissapointing if I'm being honest.

I mean the game could still end up being great, but I think the expectation was that we were going to be getting something more like Obsidians Skyrim.

I should probably temper my expectations given Xbox first party has been kind of disappointing this gen (just my opinion!), but I can't help being optimistic, bordering on excited for this game! 😅 Obsidian is quite a talented studio, even if this is something new for them.

Whatever the estimate is, I can almost guarantee that I'll take about twice that long to actually finish it, so this is fine by me! laugh

Frankly that conversation is general is very complicated imo since a lot of aspects of a game are tied to one’s length. Story pacing, gimmick/enemy variety (is the game too short to explore one or both of these to the degree that we wish to/is the game too long that the gimmicks get old and/or combat becomes a bit rote), open world density. I could probably go on a fair bit. Not trying to invalidate your take with burn out btw.

I think Skyrim is a fun game but doing everything it has to offer was incredibly boring. I prefer the writing of Obsidian where everything isn't as copy paste as Bethesda can make it feel. Sure Skyrim has more content but I would argue the quality on average is lower than an Obsidian game.

For example, I loved Starfield's curated content but the procedural stuff that was meant to pad more time was so tedious to me. I loved Outer Worlds enough to be down for this regardless.

I like having the two different types of RPGs. If Bethesda made everything, I would grow tired of it for example.
