BigDirtyFart said:Exaggeration on your part, but say that to Ubisoft or BioWare.
Ubisoft makes generic mindless formulaic games. Anyone could tell you this was coming. In fact, Ubisoft said they knew it was coming like 5 years ago, but they never came up with a plan because all they are now is a game factory and they would need to rebuild from the ground up to change, and they can't.
You're also forgetting how much other games, that have nothing the hell to do with idpol, like skull and bones,
killed them financially. Anything idealogical you could possibly argue is present could be removed and it would make no difference on the fact that it would fail spectacularly because Ubisoft made a tax gamble oopsie in Singapore with no idea how to cultivate and run a new studio there so they got a clownshow of interns that didn't know what they were doing. Plus we know about a ton of stuff now about how utterly incompetent the leadership is. They have no idea what they're doing on any front. That's literally why they wanted a formula, and why they pumped everything into the one they found. Anyone could have told them it'd dry up, but that was a problem for later, and now it's later.
As for Bioware, they needed to show people they were going to go in the opposite direction of Inquisition. Instead they went off a cliff straight past it. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE hated that trailer. I've seen dozens and dozens of posts and things from people I know are very lefty, and all of them did not care for it with that marketing. The tone was completely off. Again, coming from a mile away due to both companies being absolutely stupid. People aren't leaving their games because they're offended. I had people I knew in college who were like, the whole bisexual wiccan blue hair like everything you can say about whatever stereotype show up in a class reunion chat that had had the conversation wander say the trailer looked awful, and when the stuff came out about the tiny amount of choices that would carry over from Inquisition were all like yeah I'm out. And on top of
that, the gameplay is shallow and boring. There is no universe where that game sold well. You could have a DEI SJW whatever the fuck utopia and it wouldn't do well because the higher ups thought that young tiktok kids like more cartoony graphics and want people to be nice in their dark fantasy game, because they're out of touch businessmen who always think they know best and what is best is always a surface level understanding of "kids." Which means bright colors, or dark colors, alternating and each time the businessman will yell eureka before just flip flopping from one to the other every 15 years.
Bioware did just about everything wrong with Veilguard and alienated
everyone. But you have a narrative to push because you have a very small circle of influence that you actually take into account when shaping it, so you need to get rid of all those other factors to make it clear obvious proof. So the only people you saw complaining were those you were hanging around, and the only opposition you saw was a bunch of loser basement dwelling Bioware fanboys and fangirls who needed it to be good and ignored every evidence to the contrary. Meanwhile the normal fans of every political bent or persuasion were like...this ain't it lol.
Also there is no exaggerating. Obsidian is going to be fine but you're trying to position things to look worse than they are. That is sky is falling. As I said before and as you ignored, Obsidian has had repeated commercial duds in the past. They will be fine.
Its *factual* that flops have been killing off studios the past year, just the other day BioWare laid off what was it, their entire writing team? EA blamed the veilguard for layoffs and extreme underperforming. Ubisoft closed an entire office due to their failures?
So again, as I covered above Ubisoft is bailing water, and has been, and will continue to do so faster and faster before they die. Second, Bioware knew the game would do badly and so they laid off tons of people a while ago the moment their work was done. They kept people on to get it out the door, and then when it did even worse than they hoped, they had to send people elsewhere. Because it's a massive disappointment to basically everyone who could be interested in it, so uh, yeah. It flopped.
And also what's *factual* is that successes have too. Little inconvenient fact there. And then to declaw that fact, you'll be like "oh but not to the same extent" but like, no really dude, a ton of successes have been still decimating studios. We're literally on an xbox site, where one of the most important exclusives from a PR perspective, Hi Fi Rush, had its studio deleted. And we even know that one sold well on top of being received well. It doesn't matter, because the actual, dry, boring business reason, if you actually pay attention in the actual meetings with the actual business people, is because companies are just mismanaging money very badly. They're spending way more than is necessary to even produce the games they are producing, and they have to recoup those costs. And if you actually talk with the actual people involved, the things that get wasted on aren't some idealogical nonsense. It's just boring shit like paying some people too much, hiring too many people for a job because they literally didn't even pay attention to how many were hired, working on a feature that no one takes responsibility for and then firing them and deleting the work. I'm not even a game dev, although I have spent plenty of time around this exact same kind of disfunction, and as a layman if you actually go do the homework, the answer is almost always something very, very
boring.Chettlar said:Obsidian is going to be fine. And most people do not give a shit about this culture war bullshit.
I’d agree with you if my previous statement was false. Players in droves have been voting with their wallets and studios have been shuttered because of it. Don’t forget about the long string of sweet baby failures. It’s not like I’d buy these games anyways as I am not the target audience however they all flop at one point or another.
Covered above. You have a very narrow view that requires you to ignore a lot of information to fit a narrative because you're an idpol warrior. I know you've convinced yourself that you are a disciplined unbiased observer, but you are not. "Long string of sweet baby failures" meanwhile many sweet baby games are successful and many of the failures have nothing to do with them, and meanwhile some of these are firing tons of people when they fail and some when they succeed. You are deleting vast swathes of context to achieve this narrative and it's obnoxious.
Chettlar said:I literally cannot make myself care if someone on a team is a dickhead. Every team has dickheads all over political spectrum. With creative people, you're going to get people with sticks up their asses.
Good for you. Many care that the creatives they are trying to support call them racists, bigots, misogynists… but never liars…. Hmmmm….
...I've seen plenty call them liars. This is more of that thing where you have to be very tunnel visioned to craft a narrative. Also this doesn't counter my point at all lol. Your circle of information is very narrow. Spend more time following more people instead of only reading an isolated tweet you were turned onto in a subreddit, youtube video, etc. Like come on man. "Hmmmm" like you've made a biting point meanwhile it's not even true in the most embarrassing way possible.
Chettlar said:No one actually cares, except a bunch of loud losers who have nothing better to do. Obsidian has had serious duds commercially and they're still here, meanwhile there is clearly hype behind this game, and it's already funded with gamepass. They will be fine lol. So you're "worry" isn't real.
Refer to all previous points.
Chettlar said:Most annoying people on the planet I swear. "The controversy! the controversy!" meanwhile it's just a bunch of people being Karen about some thing some person said about every other game that comes out. Who cares.
Mask off moment for you here. I came in with facts and you’re coming in with insults, who’s the Karen here?
Most substanceless reply ever lol. I'm not here to insult anyone. If you're bitching about something stupid, I'm going to say you are bitching about stupid things. What you are doing is Karen behavior. You're making something a bigger deal than it is, and pretending your influence is bigger than it is. I am describing my opinion of your behavior. There's no name calling there unless you just don't have agency over your behavior or something. And as I covered, you "came in with facts" but this is surface level. It doesn't actually make your point sound. It's dressing up what is, at it's core, whining about things that don't matter, supported by a narrow viewpoint that hasn't been challenged because doing so, honestly, is boring. "Mask off" as if my entire post wasn't me openly saying the whole post through that I think you are reducing yourself to an idpol warrior who is mad things don't cater to him. Meanwhile the rest of the normal people out there who don't spend all day making posts on forums (inb4 you say this single forum I happened to swing by makes me one of those lol) literally do not care.
Again, if people didn’t care, the gaming industry wouldn’t be producing flop after flop and losing billions of dollars in the process. And hey, if I’m wrong, and the game does well, you can come back into this thread and point it out and I will take an L. but we both know I won’t be taking an L on this.
And again, covered above.
And no I really will not be coming back to this thread to crow that I was right because, you know, like I've been saying this entire time, I'm just here to play games, like a normal person. I see people being annoying, I call it out because I'm bored of grinding destiny all day on my day off and what's a little writing exercise gonna hurt me, and then I move on,
because I'm not an idpol warrior, so I'm going to forget about this because the only thing I'll be focusing on is playing the game probably or a million other things that are more important. Like seriously why would I do that lol.
Plus, like, I know the game isn't going to go crazy over the moon. We also aren't going to know how good it does, because all that's going to happen is what always does. It'll have lower sales numbers on steam due to being on gamepass and people will call it a flop, even if it does very well based on internal metrics. It's a great big circus. A fun little dance we do every time, where everyone has their little perspective on what the lack of information we have means, and everyone is going to use it to back up their preconceived opinion. Obsidian will probably say it did nicely because it will probably do fine, and people will say they're lying to save face. Because nobody will actually be having a real conversation. It's just a vapid political dance that doesn't mean anything because no one actually cares. Not even you.
Meanwhile I'll probably just try out the game. Maybe I take to it maybe I don't. Maybe it'll be like Indiana Jones where I absolutely love the first several hours so decide to save it for when I can go on a proper vacation from work. It's singleplayer, it can wait for me. And then I'll move on. Like a normal person.
Like ya'll, this is just a fun game ya'll are playing. No one cares. Everyone's feigning offense and power to make themselves feel important because they live empty lives and saying actually that's what's going on with the
other side. That's why it always plays out the same no matter what the facts are, because the facts are boring and everyone is just first world bored.
