Avowed looks like a gorgeous Xbox RPG, but the combat is missing something

The amount of people already writing this game off over a developer diary with what is likely not a finished product in gameplay is amusing.

It’s an Obsidian RPG. By now I would think their strengths and weaknesses in how they make games is pretty well known by now. Anyone expecting a radical departure is, as seemingly always, setting themselves up for disappointment.

I thought the combat actually looked really slow too, it only seemed to look more the speed it should with dual wielding. Compare it against the speed of borderlands which came out 15 years ago or outriders or pretty much any other pve game and it looks slow. If that's the wrong way to look at it then you have to compare it against other open world RPGs like oblivion or Skyrim and I wonder whether the world building will match those games. Graphically it looked pretty but need to see more to see if it will actually be fun.

    I like the cover art.

But I don't think having skulls/skeletons shifts units.

God damnit, stop ruining video games.
Why is everyone so fixated on the combat in an RPG game? From the devs to everyone reacting to it.
New Vegas had terrible combat but it was an amazing game.
The problem isn't just the combat, it's that this game shouldn't even mention it.
Where is the civilization, the immersion in the world?
The believability that this is a lived in world?
Things locals do to pass time, simulating an actual world with trends, an economy, traditions.
This insistence on combat just shows me how talentless this team is and they shouldn't be called Obsidian.
This game is going to flop harder than Redfall and I can see it from a mile away.

Well it looked Fable meets Skyrim to me

The world seemed beautiful and gorgeous, but we still don't know much about the setting the protagonist, the people the main quest. So it's hard to make judgement

Combat seems nothing special, and more like first person fable to me then anything. But if the world, sorry and setting is exciting, the gameplay can take a backseat, it's manageable

So far it looks pretty but nothing else. May be it's all flash but no substance but need to see more

Ya didn't look hot. Usually they'll hide poor gameplay by freezing the game with weapon/spell select screen, but they didn't do that.

This was my first view and I'm excited to know more. Seems like my kind of game!

Can we stop focusing on "strategy combat" that requires perfect blocking to get past enemies?

Seriously I'd like to believe not every gamer is hardcore and has the time to go through the Dark Souls/Wo Long/Life of P pain. After a day of work and kids, simple relaxing hack and slash is perfectly fine for me thanks. Otherwise I'd just watch some Netflix you know

The developers will probably not pull out a miracle and make this game look any better in the remaining months. If the build was so early, they wouldn't have shown it in such detail. What you see here is largely what you will get, and it's a disappointingly outdated, simplistic, cheap AA title with ridiculous graphics and combat. After the Pillars of Eternity games people were rightly expecting a serious RPG in that universe. Instead we're getting a childish looking Game Pass filler that wouldn't look out of place on Xbox One.

This was a demo of a game that's still around 9 months from release. Chill people.

People need to chill on their hype and anticipation for games. Just wait and see what happens when the game comes out. Why bother consuming hours of trailers, new articles, forum posts and such before release. Like seriously people spend more time researching/discussing/bashing/anticipating a game then actually playing them when they finally release. Just put it in the back of your tiny brains that the game exists, and let it be. Play it when it comes out

I liked TOW and I'm sure I'll like this, but I hope they up the scale of the game. TOW felt small/short for the type of game it is.

For anyone who wants to see more combat and world
Yeah I just watched this and it does the alpha footage way more justice, especially the exploration and traversal of the level design. The way they've made this playable area into something that feels like natural terrain and can be approached from many different paths and playstyles looks really great.

The combat looks more complex and engaging too, but might still need a little more weight to individual actions. But games like Fallout, Outer Worlds, Elder Scrolls, even their recent Grounded, all had combat that was merely passable and not the highlight of the game. So as long as it's compelling to explore the living lands and the rpg elements are interesting enough, which I trust Obsidian with, it should be in pretty good shape.
