Feel that, Xbox fans? It's the calm before today's Xbox Games Showcase. It's been a busy and somewhat turbulent year for the Xbox team already, and there's a lot of interest in what we might see in the Showcase. It would be great to see some clarification on Microsoft's plans for the future, and when it comes to the games themselves, we're hoping for a wave of news on all the Game Pass games coming soon and on what's going on with the major upcoming Xbox exclusives. So many major exclusives haven't yet got a release date: Fable, Avowed, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle; there's a lot we'd like to hear about, and so our Xbox Games Showcase 2024 predictions are a mix of what we'd love to see (and think there's a good chance will show) as well as dream games or projects we'd love to see announced one day.

Fable release window

We’ve only had a few trailers since Fable’s 2020 announcement, but those have been more than enough to get us excited for it to arrive. Everything from the fantasy setting to the British humour has helped Fable to become one of the most anticipated Xbox Game Studios titles on the horizon — exactly how far away on that horizon it is, remains to be seen. Last year’s Xbox Games Showcase brought us an excellent new trailer (the one with Richard Ayoade as a gardening-obsessed giant), so perhaps they’ll treat us again. Although
(like my other predictions on this list) Fable doesn’t have a release date yet, I’m hoping this will change during the Xbox Games Showcase, especially now that a new report suggests Fable will show with a 2025 release window during the event. It would be great to have a more exact (and nearer!) release date, but any release info at all would be ideal. In the meantime, we've got a round-up of everything we know about Fable to keep us company while we wait.

Everwild release window

I’ve been hoping to see Everwild at every Xbox event ever since it was revealed as Rare’s new IP during X019. This was mostly because of how gorgeous and intriguing it looked (that intriguing part is helped along by the fact that those beautiful trailers create a whole lot of questions) but now I’m also hoping to see it because, after reports of it being “restarted from scratch,” I’d just like confirmation we are still going to get to play it one day. Since then, we have seen signs that Everwild is still well on the way, but it would be great to see that substantiated with a big juicy trailer — preferably with a release window at the end.

Age of Mythology release date!

I know, I know, after predicting, requesting, and bringing up Age of Mythology wherever I can, the hopes of Mythology fans everywhere were finally answered when the announcement of Age of Mythology Retold was followed up a few months ago by an Xbox Game Pass release window of 2024. Now it’s all about a release date for when we can finally get our mitts on what is still one of my favorite games (and one of the best RTS games) of all time. Gods, monsters, sassy villagers: Age of Mythology has it all, letting you explore the Greek, Norse, Egyptian, and Atalantean pantheons, wielding a variety of troops and mythical beasties. Actually, Age of Mythology Retold will have it all, as there’ll also be a new game mode: Arena of the Gods. All we need now is a release date. Arkantos, awaken!

State of Decay 3

It’s been four years since Undead Labs announced State of Decay 3 during the Xbox Games Showcase in 2020, so it’s surely about time we saw more of the developer’s next open-world, zombie-slaughtering game. While we’ve been eating well with the continuous stream of updates for State of Decay 2, I’m still extremely excited to learn… well, anything about the sequel, which so far has been hidden away behind one very short cinematic teaser. According to recent rumors, State of Decay 3 is “coming along very nicely", so perhaps Undead Labs will treat us to another trailer this weekend.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remaster

Xbox Games Showcase 2024 TrueAchievements predictions and hopes

Unlike State of Decay 3, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remaster is yet to be officially announced, but a leaked release schedule last year suggested it was down to launch in 2022. Of course, it hasn’t released yet and Bethesda hasn’t acknowledged its existence, so it could well have been canceled, despite rumors that a third-party developer is working on it. It’s been 13 years since the last mainline entry into the series, and will be some time until we see The Elder Scrolls 6 arrive — which is now in active development — so a remaster of the phenomenal The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (and its horse armor) would be greatly appreciated right about now. We still have the awesome Elder Scrolls Online: Gold Road expansion coming this month to keep us busy, though!

New Xbox hardware teased

Xbox Games Showcase 2024 TrueAchievements predictions and hopes

For my Xbox Games Showcase predictions (and hopes), I am mostly going to be referring back to my Xbox 2024 predictions article published at the end of last year. From this year’s showcase, we could get some sort of hardware news from Xbox. Back in February, Sarah Bond revealed that there’s “some exciting stuff coming in hardware that we're going to share this holiday." While it sounds like a full reveal will happen in the run-up to the holiday season, it’s possible that Xbox could tease whatever new hardware it has during the showcase. What this new hardware is exactly is a little harder to pin down, but rumors suggest Microsoft is working on an Xbox handheld, which, as long as it’s not some cloud-only streaming device, would revolutionize the way we hunt achievements.

Microsoft announces more Activision Blizzard games for Xbox Game Pass

It’s been eight months since Microsoft closed on its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, and other than a vague “2024” window, Game Pass subscribers are still none the wiser about when they can start seeing the fruits of that takeover. Sure, we had Diablo 4 back in March, but what about the Call of Duty franchise? Where are Crash, Spyro, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2? Back in April, it was rumored that Xbox was “gearing up” for an announcement on its back catalog of Activision Blizzard games for the Xbox Games Showcase, so it sounds like something could be in the works. The Spyro: Reignited Trilogy was also randomly ported to PC not too long ago, suggesting a Game Pass release could be on the cards soon. If Microsoft does make an Activision Blizzard Game Pass announcement, hopefully it will drop all of those games onto the service the following day, much like what happened with Bethesda’s games following that acquisition — how exciting was that?

Gears 6 finally announced

Xbox Games Showcase 2024 TrueAchievements predictions and hopes

With Gears 5 now almost five years old, surely we’re due another mainline entry into the franchise? In recent months, there has been plenty of buzz about a new Gears game. We’ve seen a job listing suggest a new Gears title is on the way, a voice actor teasing an announcement, and of course, rumors galore from leakers and insiders all pointing to a Gears reveal happening at the Xbox Games Showcase. While I hope Gears 6 is announced, I’d also love to see that Gears of War collection, if it even exists, break cover. If not either of these, how about a Gears Tactics 2?

That's a few of our predictions and hopes for the big Xbox show this weekend. What are you hoping or expecting to see? Let us know in the comments, and if you're looking for a guide to the not-E3 madness, check out our whole Summer Game Fest 2024 schedule.
